POP-goes the-TONE!
Set to release their first studio album on June 8th, Poptone, the band consisting of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail founders Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, along with Haskins' daughter Diva Dompe, kicked off a west coast tour earlier this week and stopped off at the Regency Ballroom for an evening of some of the most memorable songs from their previous bands, including a few that they haven't played live before.
Opening their set with the Love and Rockets classic "I Feel Speed," Daniel Ash gave the song an almost haunting feeling with his chorus and flange filled guitar tone, with a blacklight making him look almost glow in the dark. After "Haunted When the Minutes Drag," Ash asked the audience if they were ready for some eighties pop music before he and the band kicked into "All In My Mind," The evening was not all Love and Rockets though, as they dove deep into their back catalog, playing more than a couple of Tones on Tail songs, including "Happiness," "Performance," and of course "Ball of Confusion," before wrapping up the evening with "Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man.)
Poptone's debut record will be released on June 8th via Cleopatra Records, and if their live show is any indication, it will be worth the price of purchase.
